Solo entrepreneur or team — which option should I choose?
For teams, we recommend assigning a member with the officer role within your organization. If you lose access, the officer can reset your account without ever exposing your data — this is the most secure approach in a strict zero-knowledge context. If you are a solo entrepreneur, Filvacy Recovery is a solid alternative: Filvacy stores an encrypted recovery key on your behalf, accessible only through a verified identity process. Simple, secure, and without depending on a colleague.
What is Filvacy Recovery?
Filvacy Recovery is an optional security feature that allows Filvacy to help you regain access to your account in an absolute emergency — meaning if you have forgotten your password AND lost your personal recovery key. Without this option enabled, losing both of these simultaneously results in the permanent loss of access to your encrypted vault.
How does it work technically?
When you enable this option, your browser encrypts a copy of your organization's private key using Filvacy's RSA public key — directly on your device, without ever transmitting the key in plaintext. Filvacy stores this encrypted "blob". In the event of a recovery request, Filvacy decrypts the blob with its private key (stored offline on a secure physical device) to restore your access, after identity verification.
Can Filvacy access my data at any time?
No. Filvacy can only use the blob following a formal recovery request initiated by you, with identity verification. Filvacy's private key is never online — it is stored on an air-gapped physical device. Outside of a recovery procedure, no one at Filvacy has access to your key.
Who can enable or disable this option?
Only the organization's administrator (owner) can enable or disable Filvacy Recovery. Team members do not have access to this feature. To access it: dashboard → Settings → Organization → Filvacy Recovery. Enabling it requires your explicit consent, entry of a verification code sent by email, and your vault must be unlocked. You can revoke the option at any time — Filvacy immediately deletes the encrypted blob.
What happens if I revoke the option?
Filvacy immediately deletes its copy of the encrypted blob. Recovery through Filvacy is then no longer possible. If you subsequently lose your password and recovery key, access to your vault will be permanently lost. You receive a confirmation email for every activation or revocation.
